This is a letter signed by 25 Fields medalists about the fast-paced “progress” that AI models are making in the world of mathematics.
“Over the course of generations, [research mathematics] has built [...] tools to comprehend the mathematical landscape. [...] Famous problems have often served as landmarks and lighthouses against which one can measure an improved understanding of this landscape. [...] the mass production at faster and faster pace of "true/false" statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas.” (emphasis mine)
A (famous) unsolved problem is merely a testament to our lack of understanding of a certain area of mathematics. To arrive at the solution, first we must study further, deepening our understand of that area of mathematics. If an oracle gives us a rushed final answer without the body of work that usually backs such an answer, we lose out on everything else we'd be getting from the process of getting to the solution ourselves.
